The Fifth International Zebu Cattle Exhibition, scheduled to take place from August 7 to 23, 2026, was canceled.
According to local media reports, the suspension allegedly followed threats and demands for payments of 500 pesos for each of the more than 5,000 head of cattle that were expected to be sold during the event.
The alleged extortion would have totaled approximately 2.5 million pesos, an amount that reportedly led producers to withdraw and resulted in the cancellation of one of the most important livestock events in northern Veracruz.
Governor Calls for Formal Complaints
Governor Rocío Nahle stated that there is no official information confirming the alleged extortion and urged the affected cattle producers to file formal complaints with the Attorney General’s Office so they can provide information and allow authorities to investigate the case.
“We are going to invite them to go to the Attorney General’s Office, file a complaint, and provide us with information.”
Livestock Exhibition Suspended
Meanwhile, the livestock exhibition has been removed from the fair’s program, and the Mexican Association of Zebu Breeders has suspended its participation.
The fair will continue with concerts, amusement rides, and the traditional horseback parade, but its livestock exhibition—the centerpiece of the event—will not take place this year.
A 75-year-old tradition has been brought to a halt amid fear, uncertainty, and reports of alleged extortion demands.
