What You Need to Know:
Although the application process will only remain available until December 31, there will be no changes to the requirements or the way to obtain your permanent driver’s license.
As the countdown to apply for your permanent driver’s license in Mexico City (CDMX) has begun, questions have arisen about how to obtain it and whether there have been any changes during these final months.
So, here is everything you need to know about the process.
Requirements to Apply for a Permanent Driver’s License in CDMX
Let’s get straight to the point. During this final stage in which the application process will remain active, there will be no changes. The cost will remain $1,500 pesos, and to obtain the document, you must not have been sanctioned more than once under the “Drive Without Alcohol” program, nor have convictions for traffic-related offenses.
Now, pay attention to the documents you need in both original and copy:
- Official identification document.
- Proof of address from Mexico City (CDMX) or the State of Mexico.
- Paid payment reference (línea de captura).
- Previously scheduled appointment.
- Proof of passing the theoretical examination (only if this is the first time applying for a Type A driver’s license).
How to Apply Step by Step
Step 1: Registration and Theoretical Examination
To begin your application, first access the official permanent driver’s license website using your Llave CDMX account (if you do not have one, register using your basic personal information).
If this is your first time applying for a Type A driver’s license (the official document for driving private passenger vehicles), you must complete and pass the online theoretical examination on the traffic regulations and download your certificate.
Step 2: Payment
Once you have completed the previous step, you can generate your $1,500 peso payment reference on the same website. You may pay online or at authorized payment centers. Keep in mind that the system may take some time to reflect your payment.
Step 3: In-Person Appointment
After your payment reference has been paid, return to the portal to validate it and select a SEMOVI service center to schedule an in-person appointment. Once finished, you must download your appointment confirmation.
Step 4: Attend the Service Center
To complete the process, attend your appointment on the scheduled date with the documents listed above so your biometric information can be collected and your driver’s license can be issued.
These are the steps to complete the process online. However, you may also complete the procedure in person by going directly to a SEMOVI service center authorized for this process with your required documentation.
Now that you know obtaining your permanent driver’s license in CDMX is simple, all that’s left is to complete the process, as there is still plenty of time—as long as you don’t wait until the last minute.
Remember that you have until December 31, 2026, to obtain this driver’s license and avoid having to renew it.
