The Mexico City government will rebuild and reinstall the sculptures of Fidel Castro and Che Guevara, which were removed from the Tabacalera Garden last year by the Cuauhtémoc borough, announced Mayor Clara Brugada.
“I have decided that we, as the City Government, will rebuild these sculptures and install them in another location in the city, so that we don’t have problems of this kind again. Certainly, some residents disagreed, the mayor disagreed, but there are other residents, people, citizens, who agree; and, based on that, we as the City Government do agree and we are going to do it,” she said.
Following last weekend’s demonstration, organized by groups commemorating the anniversary of the Cuban Revolution, who demanded the return of the statues, Brugada Molina stated that “dialogue and politics should take precedence over any other action.”
“What we would like most, right?, is for all demonstrations to always have the possibility of dialogue, a way to reach an agreement beforehand. It seems to me that there are other types of demonstrations, which we know are forms of expression, and when it comes to more serious matters, like assaulting people, destroying businesses, private places, offices, and so on, then what is appropriate is to apply the law, because these are more serious actions,” he stated during his press conference this Monday.
