Campeche’s Economy Contracts 5.2% Annually During First Quarter of 2026, Ranking Last Nationwide

Campeche’s economic activity registered an annual contraction of 5.2 percent during the first quarter of 2026, placing the state in the last position nationwide, according to the State Economic Activity Quarterly Indicator (ITAEE) published by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).

The report indicates that the decline was the result of a decrease in secondary activities, which fell 6.7 percent, and tertiary activities, which declined 1.6 percent. In contrast, primary activities grew by 13.7 percent.

Secondary activities, related to mining, construction, energy generation and distribution, as well as manufacturing industries, had the greatest impact on the state’s results, subtracting 5.1 percentage points from the total variation of Campeche’s economy.

In the case of tertiary activities (commerce and services), Campeche also ranked last nationwide, recording an annual decrease of 1.6 percent.

On the other hand, primary activities (agriculture, livestock, fishing, and forestry) showed a growth of 13.7 percent, placing the state in 12th position among the 32 federal entities.

The report also indicates that Campeche was the entity with the worst economic performance in the country during the analyzed period and contributed a reduction of 0.09 percentage points to the national variation.

In the analysis of the south-southeast region, made up of Campeche, Chiapas, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Veracruz, and Yucatán, economic activity showed a decrease of 0.3 percent, while Campeche was the state with the greatest negative contribution to the regional performance.

When excluding oil mining from the analysis, the situation did not show improvement either. Campeche’s economic activity recorded an annual decline of 4.7 percent, while secondary activities without oil mining decreased 21.3 percent, representing the second-largest reduction in the country, only behind Quintana Roo (22.7 percent).
