Querétaro Governor Mauricio Kuri González called on the media to defend freedom of expression in light of the federal proposal for guidelines regarding audience rights, warning that any regulation must be thoroughly analyzed to avoid infringing upon this right.

The governor stated that it is primarily up to the media outlets themselves to participate in the debate over the initiative and maintain a dialogue with federal lawmakers while it is being discussed.

“Freedom that is not defended is lost, and here, it is the media outlets themselves that must defend it,” he said.

Kuri also urged the National Chamber of the Radio and Television Industry (CIRT), as well as concessionaires and industry representatives, to review the scope of the proposal and submit comments aimed at protecting freedom of expression.

“The Radio and Television Industry Chamber will have to start working on this matter to mitigate the impact of this new law, which could pose a risk to freedom of expression,” he noted.

Finally, the governor insisted that any modification to the regulatory framework must be developed through a process of dialogue, analysis, and consensus with the sectors involved, in order to guarantee the full exercise of freedom of expression and the right to information.
