Veracruz has been the site of hundreds of traffic accidents over the years. Many of these incidents have been caused by a variety of factors, including distracted driving, speeding, and poor road conditions.
“The highway is very dangerous. They use poor-quality asphalt, and as soon as it rains, potholes appear, but no one fixes them,” said Marco Antonio Carmona, a resident of Dos Ríos in the municipality of Emiliano Zapata.
The Xalapa–Veracruz Highway is approximately 104 kilometers (65 miles) long.

Although accidents can occur along different sections of the highway, there are specific areas where they happen more frequently, sometimes affecting nearby homes.
“A car crashed into the area. It’s very dangerous for us,” Marco added.
Luis Roberto Hernández, another resident of the same community, said the crashes occur because:
“They drive at excessive speeds and go straight off the road. I think about four vehicles have ended up crashing there.”
The municipal government building is located approximately 529 meters from the area where these accidents frequently occur.

Potholes and Driving Hazards
Potholes are another significant factor contributing to these accidents and have, in some cases, resulted in fatal crashes. One such incident occurred on July 26, when Omar Álvarez lost his life.
“Motorcycles have crashed here—about three of them. None of those riders died, but this time he wasn’t so lucky,” Marco explained.
Luis Roberto added:
“People who aren’t familiar with the road suddenly encounter a pothole, swerve to avoid it, overcorrect, and lose control.”

Although the highway receives regular maintenance, many residents insist that excessive speed remains the primary cause of accidents.
Marco Antonio stated:
“Vehicles pass through here very fast. It’s also a matter of drivers and motorists lacking awareness.”
Máximo Rodríguez agreed:
“I don’t think the road itself is the problem. The problem is people driving too fast.”
Marisela Cortés added:
“They drive at high speeds and don’t use caution, especially if they’re under the influence of alcohol or talking on their cell phones.”
