Heavy Rains Damage Up to 20 Schools in Nayarit
Between 15 and 20 schools across Nayarit have reported damage caused by the current rainy season, primarily involving roof leaks, fallen trees, damaged perimeter walls, and the collapse of structures built without complying with construction regulations.
Marco Antonio Berlín, director of the Nayarit Institute for Educational Infrastructure (INIFE), explained that the rainy season began earlier than expected, with heavy rainfall affecting nearly every municipality in the state since early June.
He noted, however, that preventive measures carried out by school principals and staff—such as trimming trees and removing accumulated leaves—have helped reduce risks and prevent more serious damage.
Unauthorized School Structure Collapses
Among the reported incidents, Berlín highlighted the collapse of a school canopy (dome) that had been built without proper authorization in a rural community near Tepic.
According to the official, the structure gave way after excessive leaves and rainwater accumulated on its roof.
He emphasized that all construction projects on school campuses should be supported by structural engineering plans approved by the appropriate authorities to ensure student safety.
Additional Damage Reported
Authorities have also received reports of:
- Fallen trees damaging perimeter walls, including a case in Santiago Ixcuintla.
- Roof leaks that have deteriorated concrete slabs and roofing structures.
These issues are being addressed as school administrators report the damage to INIFE.
Repairs Underway
Rehabilitation work is currently being carried out at Estado de Guerrero Elementary School in the community of La Guásima, municipality of Acaponeta.
The project includes rebuilding the roof’s drainage slopes to prevent water accumulation before installing a new waterproof membrane.
Infrastructure Improvements Continue
Berlín added that during the current state administration, the backlog in educational infrastructure has been significantly reduced through the construction of nearly 400 school canopies, along with the renovation of classrooms, restrooms, and other educational facilities in municipalities throughout Nayarit.
