With the support of Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño, Sonora joined the 2026 National Reforestation Campaign—an initiative spearheaded by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo—carrying out actions aimed at restoring degraded areas, strengthening vegetation cover, and protecting ecosystems.
From Cerro de la Cementera in Hermosillo, the governor presided over the state launch of the campaign, during which one thousand native trees and plants were planted across two hectares. The project aims to restore a total of 210 hectares: 40 hectares at the La Sauceda Urban Forest and 170 hectares at Cerro de la Cementera.
Durazo emphasized that, given Sonora’s arid conditions, every tree represents a valuable asset for the state, and he highlighted the importance of using species adapted to the local ecosystem.
The plant species used include guayacán, palo verde, ocotillo hembra, torote blanco, agave, palo fierro, mesquite, and yucca—species that will help restore the region’s characteristic vegetation.
According to state authorities, 40 hectares have been addressed so far, with approximately 11,000 native plants established. At Cerro de la Cementera, the goal is to plant up to 13,000 specimens across the site’s 170 hectares.
The governor noted that integrating Cerro de la Cementera into the La Sauceda Urban Forest project will create a major “green lung” for Hermosillo, featuring areas dedicated to conservation, walking, cycling, and family recreation. The long-term vision is to establish a large-scale urban forest of significant environmental importance.
Durazo also reported that reforestation efforts were carried out in 13 municipalities across Sonora during 2026, resulting in the planting of approximately 70,000 native specimens.
The event brought together 545 participants, including federal and state officials, organizations, and volunteers. Agencies such as Semarnat, Sader, Sedena, Semar, the National Guard, Conafor, Conanp, Sembrando Vida, Sagarhpa, Sidur, and Cedes participated in these efforts.
