The governor of Zacatecas, David Monreal Ávila, questioned whether members of the work team of Zacatecan senator Geovanna Bañuelos de la Torre—one of seven candidates seeking to coordinate the state committee for the Defense of Transformation and State Sovereignty—were actually involved in a road accident caused by unidentified individuals, which the senator herself described as a possible attack on Friday, August 7.
“It could have been a self-inflicted attack,” Governor David Monreal Ávila suggested when speaking to local reporters on Sunday during a public event. He “recommended” that the senator from the Labor Party (PT) promptly file the corresponding complaint regarding what she herself made public, either with the state prosecutor’s office or the federal prosecutor’s office, “if she trusts them.”
The Morena governor stated that “it would be very serious if something like that were actually happening,” referring to the alleged attack against the senator’s team. He insisted that “it is something very serious,” while raising questions about the possible motive: “Then the question would be: why did they attack her? What are they involved in, or what happened for these things to be occurring?”
Bañuelos de la Torre—coordinator of the PT parliamentary group in the Senate of the Republic—reported through her press team on Friday night that the six occupants of the vehicle belonging to the senator, who were traveling in a Chevrolet Suburban with license plates ZHD-162-C, were reported without serious injuries, although the vehicle was declared a total loss.
“They are like part of my family, hardworking young people whose well-being is my absolute priority,” the senator briefly stated.
The alleged attack occurred on Friday morning on Federal Highway 23, at kilometer 154, between the municipalities of Colotlán, Jalisco, and Tlaltenango, Zacatecas. Senator Bañuelos de la Torre was traveling in another vehicle along the same route, accompanied, among others, by former UAZ rector Alfredo Femat Bañuelos, coordinator of the PT caucus in the State Congress, as well as federal deputy Fernando Vilchis.
This Sunday, following Governor David Monreal Ávila’s statements, Senator Geovanna Bañuelos de la Torre confirmed to this newspaper through her spokesperson, Rogelio Navarrete, that as of Sunday afternoon she had still not filed a formal complaint against the individuals who allegedly caused the violent departure from the road of the vehicle carrying her staff members.
According to her spokesperson, the reason for the delay was that the Federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR) delegation in the capital of Zacatecas is located too far away from the municipalities in the southeastern part of the state, where Bañuelos de la Torre continued conducting tours and activities on Saturday and Sunday.
