A GPS review of two rental cars helped uncover an alleged fraud scheme in Mérida, resulting in the arrest of three people in Chichà Suárez. A rental company noticed that, after handing over the vehicles, both remained stationary, which raised suspicions.
After notifying the owner, images of the people who had rented the vehicles were shared in a group used to report possible fraud cases. There, they received information indicating that the individuals were allegedly connected to similar cases. The affected parties then followed the GPS locations and went to recover the vehicles using duplicate keys.
They discovered that one of the vehicles had been pawned to a third party using allegedly fraudulent documentation. The person who had received the vehicle as collateral filed a theft report after realizing that the automobile had disappeared from the location where it had been kept.
Authorities later verified that the documents presented to pawn the vehicle were allegedly false, while the actual owner provided documentation proving ownership.
The affected parties then coordinated with one another after learning that the alleged suspects had arranged to bring another vehicle to pawn.
When the individuals arrived at the meeting point, several of the affected parties were already waiting for them. Police officers subsequently arrived and arrested Ana Luisa H. B., Jesús Ramiro T. R., and Carolina C. C. A fourth alleged participant, identified as David Israel B. Q., was also named in connection with the case.
Two of the complainants have filed cases under investigation numbers FGE/NORTE/UNADT-3815/2026 and FGE/UNATD/UNADT-8808/2026.
The affected parties claim that at least six people may have been victims of the alleged scheme. They called on anyone who recognizes the arrested individuals and believes they may have been affected by a similar case to contact the authorities and file a formal complaint.
