Transporters Prepare Mobilization Over Alleged Irregular Inspections and Illegal Charges on Federal Highways
Orizaba, Veracruz. In response to repeated complaints from the transportation sector regarding insecurity problems and alleged acts of extortion on different highway stretches across the country, the National Association of Transporters (ANTAC) announced that it will hold a mobilization this month toward San Roberto, Nuevo León, with the aim of demanding intervention from the authorities and the removal of alleged checkpoints considered irregular by operators.
David Estévez Gamboa, president of the organization, reported that the sector’s concerns are not limited to the northern region of the country, as transporters have also reported questioned inspection points in the border area between Puebla and Veracruz, a strategic route for the movement of goods and national supply.
According to the organization’s leader, the actions undertaken by ANTAC to bring attention to the problems of insecurity and extortion on highways have made it possible to identify several points considered high-risk areas for operators. These include:
- San Roberto, Nuevo León.
- San Blas.
- Various stretches of Sonora and Baja California.
- Highway corridors located between Puebla and Veracruz.
Estévez Gamboa announced that a commission of transporters will travel to San Roberto during August to request action from the competent authorities and demand the elimination of any inspection point operating outside the legal framework.
The sector representative recalled that, according to the regulations applicable to federal highways, the National Guard is responsible for surveillance and enforcement activities related to federal transportation. He therefore expressed concern about the participation of individuals or groups carrying out inspections without having the legal authority to do so.
He also clarified that the organization’s position does not seek to question the presence of security forces, but rather to denounce those inspections that, according to transporters, could lead to improper practices or financial harm to operators.
ANTAC confirmed that it will continue its efforts to represent and support the sector in demanding safer conditions on the country’s highways. Although the exact date of the mobilization has not been disclosed, the organization assured that it will take place during the month of August.
Finally, the organization called on federal authorities to strengthen oversight at the points identified by transporters, particularly along the highway corridor between Puebla and Veracruz, emphasizing that any inspection must be conducted in strict accordance with the law and under the responsibility of legally authorized institutions.
