Family remittances to Baja California fall 3.9%

Family remittances to Baja California fell 3.9% year-over-year during the first half of 2026 compared with the same period of the previous year, according to information from the Bank of Mexico (Banxico).

The central bank reported that the state received $759.6 million dollars in remittances as of June 30, 2026, compared with $828 million dollars reported as of June 30, 2025. This represents the state’s first decline in remittance flows since available records began.

By municipality, Tijuana accounted for 53.6% of remittances during the first half of the year; Mexicali accounted for 18.7%; Ensenada, 15.2%; Playas de Rosarito, 5.5%; Tecate, 3.8%; and Unidentified, 1.6%, according to Banxico.

At the national level, during the January–June 2026 period, remittance income totaled $30.759 billion dollars, higher than the $29.842 billion dollars reported during the same period of 2025, representing an annual increase of 3.1%.

During the first half of 2026, 99.2% of total remittance income was sent through electronic transfers, amounting to $30.516 billion dollars. Meanwhile, remittances sent in cash and in kind² and money orders accounted for 0.6% and 0.2% of the total amount, respectively, reaching levels of $186 million and $58 million dollars.

During the January–June 2026 period, of the total remittance income sent to Mexico through electronic means, 46.7% was collected in cash, reaching $14.260 billion dollars. Meanwhile, remittances sent as deposits into bank accounts represented 53.3% of the total, amounting to $16.255 billion dollars.
