An attack involving explosive devices against security forces caused the temporary closure of Federal Highway 54 in the municipality of Tabasco, Zacatecas, specifically near the community of San Luis de Custique. The incident occurred on the morning of Thursday, August 27, 2026.
The attack occurred while security and investigative forces were traveling toward the municipality of Jalpa to carry out search warrants. As they passed through the area, explosive devices detonated, damaging some of the vehicles.
The Government of Tabasco and Municipal Civil Protection Coordination issued an initial alert asking residents to avoid traveling along the highway until further notice, follow the instructions of the authorities, remain calm and avoid approaching the affected area.
Security Forces Attacked With Explosives
The incident involved an attack against elements of the security forces of Zacatecas. According to state authorities, the explosives caused material damage, while the affected personnel did not suffer serious physical injuries.
Rodrigo Reyes Mugüerza, Secretary General of the State Government, explained that the security and investigative forces were traveling toward Jalpa to carry out search warrants when the explosives were detonated as the convoy passed through the highway.
Two police officers suffered minor injuries and received medical attention.
Governor David Monreal Ávila stated that the incident was not a direct confrontation between armed groups, but rather a reaction to intelligence and security operations being carried out in the southern canyon region of the state.
The governor also acknowledged that organized crime continues to use explosive devices in the area.
Undetonated Explosive Devices Found on the Highway
The closure of Federal Highway 54 was ordered after authorities detected additional explosive devices on the road that had not detonated.
Because of the potential danger to motorists and residents, authorities established a preventive and indefinite closure of the highway while specialized personnel secured the area.
Specialized personnel from the Mexican Army, trained in the detection, handling and deactivation of explosives, arrived at the San Luis de Custique section to establish a security perimeter and remove the dangerous material.
The highway will only be reopened once the neutralization procedures and technical inspections have been completed and authorities determine that the area no longer poses a risk to motorists or residents.
Authorities Ask Residents to Remain Sheltered
Local authorities urged residents of San Luis de Custique and surrounding communities to remain in their homes and avoid unnecessary travel while security operations continued.
Security forces increased patrols in the area and maintained control of access points to prevent private vehicles from entering the affected section of the highway.
