The figure circulating today is once again putting public debt at the center of the national conversation. 🇲🇽💰
According to data reported for the second quarter of 2026, the Historical Balance of the Public Sector’s Financial Requirements (SHRFSP), one of the broadest indicators of public debt, reached approximately 19.59 trillion pesos. This represents a real increase of 11.7% in one year.
The comparison shown in the graphic is even more striking:
🔵 Felipe Calderón: 5.3 trillion pesos
🔵 Enrique Peña Nieto: 10.4 trillion pesos
🔵 Andrés Manuel López Obrador: 17.1 trillion pesos
🔴 Claudia Sheinbaum: approximately 19.6 trillion pesos in 2026
In addition, official estimates for 2026 contemplated debt of close to 20 trillion pesos, equivalent to approximately half of Mexico’s national GDP.
⚠️ Important: The statement that “Sheinbaum is indebting us by 157 million pesos per hour” is a way of expressing a calculated rate of increase; it does not mean that the government is literally borrowing 157 million pesos every hour.
But the underlying question is valid:
👉 How much can the debt continue to grow without affecting the future of Mexicans?
Because ultimately, public debt does not simply disappear: it is paid with the country’s resources.
