Mobility in the northern area of Tampico will undergo a new road restructuring, including the creation of a pair of one-way streets around Mercado del Norte and residential, school and commercial areas, reported Héctor Rodríguez, director of Municipal Traffic and Roadways.
The official explained that the intervention responds to road engineering studies conducted over several months and seeks to adapt traffic circulation to the growth of the vehicle fleet recorded in the region over the past several decades.
“In the northern zone, it has been many years since a road restructuring aligned with the Mobility Law has been carried out,” Rodríguez said.
The project includes modifications around Mercado del Norte and the Del Valle neighborhood, with connections to roads leading to the municipal slaughterhouse, sports facilities and various educational institutions.
The area has particularly intense activity due to the presence of an elementary school, a kindergarten, a middle school and a church, in addition to the market itself. The official maintained that the new system will help organize traffic flows and reduce conflict points.
“A pair of one-way streets will be created around Mercado del Norte, in the Del Valle neighborhood, and all the residents of the area will benefit,” he explained.
Rodríguez specified that one of the problems detected during recent inspections is vehicles parking on both sides of streets that currently have two-way traffic. The combination of both conditions, he said, considerably reduces the space available for circulation.
The strategy seeks to establish interconnected roads with defined traffic directions in order to prevent congestion and improve mobility for both residents and people visiting the market, schools and businesses in the area.
The official recalled that the growth in mobility has transformed infrastructure needs. Mercado del Norte is between 38 and 40 years old, from a time when vehicle traffic was considerably lighter than it is today.
“At that time, there was not as much vehicle traffic as there is currently in the southern area of Tamaulipas,” he noted.
The restructuring will not be the first modification of this type in the area. Rodríguez indicated that the last pair of one-way streets implemented in the northern zone dates back approximately a decade. For this reason, he considered the new intervention a necessary update in response to current traffic conditions.
“After many years, another pair of one-way streets will be created in the northern zone,” he stated.
PUBLIC ROAD OBSTRUCTIONS REMOVED
The road reorganization will be accompanied by operations to recover spaces intended for circulation. Municipal Traffic authorities continue conducting inspections to remove objects placed on streets and sidewalks that obstruct passage.
Rodríguez acknowledged that some citizens still refuse to remove these obstacles, although he said authorities have initially chosen dialogue and guidance.
“We continue removing objects from public roads. There are people who remain reluctant because they are accustomed to engaging in these bad practices,” he stated.
According to the director, the operations are carried out daily during surveillance shifts. The quantity of objects removed has been so large that the Traffic Department’s facilities are currently saturated with the confiscated material.
“Every day there are fewer, but there are still some people who continue to ignore the instructions,” he said.
