Mexico Ranked Number One Food Destination in the World for 2026

Mexico has been ranked the number one food destination in the world for 2026, according to Travel And Tour World’s Top 50 Food Destinations Around the World.

The ranking placed the top destinations as follows:

  1. Mexico
  2. Italy
  3. Spain
  4. Japan
  5. India
  6. United States
  7. Greece
  8. Portugal
  9. China
  10. Indonesia
  11. France

The ranking evaluated nine factors, including culinary heritage, regional diversity, street food, fine dining, local ingredients, beverage traditions, sustainability, cultural authenticity, and the overall dining experience.

Mexico’s strength comes from its enormous regional diversity. Each part of the country has its own culinary traditions, ingredients, and techniques. Oaxaca is known for its mole and mezcal, Guadalajara for birria, tortas ahogadas, and tequila, Yucatán for cochinita pibil, Puebla for mole poblano, and Baja California for its wines and cuisine.

Mexican cuisine has also had a major influence on food around the world. Ingredients such as corn, chiles, beans, tomatoes, vanilla, avocado, and cacao originated in Mexico and later became fundamental ingredients in cuisines across the globe.

UNESCO recognized traditional Mexican cuisine in 2010, placing it on the list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The ranking therefore highlights Mexico not simply for tacos or street food, but for the depth, history, regional diversity, and global influence of its cuisine.

Mexico was ranked first among 50 countries, ahead of Italy, Spain, Japan, India, the United States, and France.
