Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum warned that the financial and technology district project being promoted in Cancún by the Quintana Roo government will not be authorized to be developed in a jungle area, meaning that the project’s location has not yet been approved and will have to be relocated to an area that has previously been environmentally impacted.

The project to develop a financial district in Cancún already has a declaration as an Economic Development Pole for Well-Being issued by the Secretariat of Economy (SE) in August, and it has interested investors, but the president warned that another location will have to be found.

The Quintana Roo government proposed a 60.7-hectare plot of land under its ownership, expandable to up to 100 hectares, located between the passenger terminal of the Maya Train and what will be the cargo terminal, west of the extension of Huayacán Avenue or Cancún Sur Bypass, within a range of 5 kilometers from Cancún International Airport. However, it is an area with medium-height jungle vegetation and has not been environmentally impacted.

Sheinbaum pointed out that the proposed location involves an area with vegetation, a situation that conditions its environmental authorization. “The location has not been approved,” she stated. It could be located in an impacted area; it can hardly be authorized in a place where there is jungle, because that jungle must be protected. So, the site where it would be developed has not yet been approved,” she said.

The Mexican president confirmed that Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama is promoting the project with the intention of diversifying Cancún’s economic and tourism activities. The proposal seeks for Cancún to incorporate activities beyond its traditional sun-and-beach offerings, including meetings and conventions related to the financial sector, as well as medical services.

As reported by REPORTUR.mx, in March, Governor Mara Lezama, while participating in the inauguration of the 89th National Banking Convention in the presence of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, surprised attendees by announcing the creation of the “Financial and Technology District,” a project that seeks to attract greater growth and development to Quintana Roo, in line with what is happening in other destinations such as Dubai.
