Around 800 military personnel are participating in Operation Anti-Drone “Águila Alta,” implemented along a section of the border between Mexico and the United States to detect and combat the use of drones.
The Secretary of National Defense, Ricardo Trevilla Trejo, reported that, so far, Mexico has not recorded any results during the development of the operation, although he said that a meeting with U.S. authorities will take place next week to exchange information and follow up on the operation.
Where Does Águila Alta Operate and How Many Personnel Are Participating?
Trevilla Trejo explained that the operation is concentrated along a 5-kilometer strip, with the Mesa de Otay area serving as the central point.
Mexico covers an area extending 500 meters in depth, while U.S. authorities are carrying out similar actions on the other side of the border.
According to the Defense Secretary, around 800 military personnel are participating and conducting patrols in the area.
Anti-Drone Equipment Can Disable Aircraft Up to 3 Kilometers Away
The operation also has semi-fixed and mobile anti-drone equipment, with the capability to disable drones within a radius of up to 3 kilometers.
Mexico has between two and three pieces of equipment to cover the section under its responsibility. The United States is carrying out similar actions on its territory.
The secretary stated that authorities have not detected an increase in the use of drones along the Mexican border.
According to information shared by U.S. authorities, drones are primarily used by people involved in the illegal trafficking of migrants, known as “polleros” or “coyotes.”
Drones Are Also Used in Michoacán and Sinaloa
Trevilla Trejo indicated that the use of drones represents a different problem in central Mexico.
He mentioned that in states such as Michoacán and Sinaloa, problems involving these aircraft have been recorded, where they are used for illicit activities.
He also recalled that the so-called Mirror Operations, implemented since February of last year, remain active along the entire border.
In the border area, 10,000 National Guard personnel and approximately 3,300 military personnel are deployed.
