A security camera captured the moment a police officer shot a civilian in Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche. The footage also shows that another police officer was present at the time of the attack. The state Attorney General’s Office is investigating the case of abuse of authority.
Local media report that on May 21, three men were drinking alcoholic beverages in public in the 23 de Julio neighborhood of Ciudad del Carmen. Neighbors in the area reported the incident to authorities, and moments later, two Campeche police officers arrived to dissuade them.
The footage shows the two officers “cut a cartridge” after getting out of the patrol car and then confronted the men who were drinking in the street. The camera angle doesn’t allow us to see what happened next, but the argument between the civilians and the authorities reportedly escalated.
Moments later, a man is seen pushing one of the officers, and another person is seen walking toward the officers, but a police officer shoots him in the leg before approaching. Police officers fired into the air to dissuade the citizens and withdrew from the scene in response to complaints from those present.
Campeche Prosecutor’s Office Investigates Police Assault on a Citizen
Alejandro Yosafat García, Undersecretary of Police Operations in Campeche, reported that the two police officers shown in the video have been suspended from their duties while the relevant investigations are conducted.
“We will not tolerate this type of act, and therefore, the decision has been made to remove both officers from their positions while the corresponding investigations are carried out,” stated Yosafat García.
The Undersecretary of Police Operations added that Internal Affairs has already reviewed the camera footage and the Prosecutor’s Office will be responsible for determining the legal status of the officers involved.
Meanwhile, the Campeche Police reported that the injured person received timely medical attention and their condition was closely monitored.
