A young woman managed to escape an apparent kidnapping attempt on the night of Wednesday, May 21, in a busy area of Cuernavaca, Morelos. Images of the incident, captured by a video surveillance camera, have been widely shared on social media and have raised alarm among residents of the Morelos capital.
It was around 10 p.m. when the incident occurred on Narciso Mendoza Street, near Universidad Avenue, in the Santa María Ahuacatitlán neighborhood, one of the busiest areas of the city. In the video, shared on the social media platform X, the young woman can be seen walking along the sidewalk. At that moment, a car pulls over, and a man gets out and tries to corner her, but is unable to.
The woman runs visibly agitated across the street, while the driver maneuvers to chase her again. Once again, the car is very close to her, and within seconds, she abruptly changes direction while screaming for help. The car stopped, but then continued on its way.
The reaction that saved her
According to witnesses, the vehicle following her was a Tsuru, possibly a taxi. Upon noticing the situation, the young woman began screaming for help. This call alerted nearby people, which apparently deterred the alleged perpetrators, who left the scene without committing the crime.
The victim’s condition is currently unknown, and although local authorities have yet to issue an official statement, the video has generated a wave of outrage among local residents.
Growing concerns for safety
Neighbors in the neighborhood have expressed concern about the increase in similar incidents. Civil organizations, especially those focused on women’s protection, have demanded an immediate response from the state government to strengthen security, especially at night.
According to the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System, five kidnappings have been recorded in the first four months of 2025, three more than in the same period last year. Still, groups point out that the grim figure could be much higher. Therefore, they are calling for an effective prevention strategy, as well as active surveillance in high-risk areas for women.
