This Friday afternoon, San Cristóbal de Las Casas experienced heavy rains that caused significant damage in several areas of the city, primarily in the northern part. The Heroic Fire Department reported that 50 homes have been affected and 10 vehicles trapped in streets that have become rivers and streams. Civil Protection personnel joined the rescue efforts and assisted the population, assisting trapped families and removing fallen trees that were obstructing public roads.
According to the official report, the stream that crosses Calzada Tlaxcala has so far reached 90% of its capacity, causing flooding on streets such as América Libre, Julián Villagrán, Rosario Castellanos, and Rivera, for which the area has been cordoned off.
In the Emiliano Zapata neighborhood, 30 de Abril Street had water at sidewalk level, while the Jordan River Bridge reached 75% of its capacity.
The Paraíso neighborhood recorded puddles of up to 15 centimeters, and on Avenida Marfil, a resident was assisted due to water entering her home.
Likewise, in the La Isla neighborhood, Río Verde Street experienced water accumulation at sidewalk level, and in the Lagos de María Eugenia area, a fallen tree that was obstructing the street was removed.
Authorities confirmed that the Santa Martha Bridge and drainage tunnel are operating normally, denying reports of blockages, and are maintaining constant monitoring of rivers and streams. The population is advised to stay home and follow weather warnings for possible light rain during the afternoon and evening.
