Chiapas’ tourism sector is gearing up for events and conventions

The Chiapas Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) reports dynamism in the meetings sector following the impact of the pandemic. The sector has seen a 60% rebound from January to date, with 31 events already attended and nine already confirmed for 2026 and 2027, primarily in the medical sector.

This was stated in an interview by Elsa Osuna Ruiz, promotion executive for the CVB, who stated that “we are looking to double our growth,” but added that they are aware that to compete with destinations like Guadalajara or Monterrey, which do have the capacity to host large-scale events, they need new infrastructure. Currently, the state can host events of up to 1,500 people.

Since the new state administration, which began in December 2024, active promotion at industry fairs has been instrumental in the rebound. “We are seeing a change, and we are seeing increased participation in events.”

The OCV, which operates with its own resources, wants to remind event organizers who are still active, “also think of us as an ideal destination,” it said in the context of the 31st edition of the National Council of the Meetings Industry (CNIR) in Puebla.

The Chiapas Convention Center and Polyforum is focused on promoting the five destinations for the state’s meetings industry in the municipalities of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, San Cristóbal de las Casas, Comitán, Palenque, and Tapachula, with the goal of positioning Chiapas as a competitive destination.

“There is already a request from the tourism industry, due to the same needs that have been emerging,” to build a new exhibition center in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, which would allow hosting events with greater demands.
