Early Tuesday morning, two dogs were found, suspected to have been poisoned, after briefly leaving their home and returning in critical condition in the Héctor Victoria neighborhood of downtown Mérida. According to the animals’ owner, one died before receiving medical attention, while the second was stabilized thanks to the quick intervention of a neighbor who is a veterinarian.

The incident occurred at the intersection of 37th and 44th streets, where police officers arrived after receiving an emergency call. Minutes later, personnel from the State Attorney General’s Office arrived to begin the corresponding investigation. As of press time, the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo) was still awaiting the arrival of the deceased animal’s body.

Residents of the area expressed their concern and anger, stating that at least seven similar cases of suspected pet poisoning have been reported in the last six months.

Residents fear this is an intentional and systematic attack, and are demanding that authorities increase security and expedite the investigation before more incidents occur.

The Prosecutor’s Office continues its investigation to determine the origin of the suspected toxic substance and identify those responsible for these acts, which have instilled fear among the residents.
