With the message “Want to photograph concerts and not die trying?”, the Mexico City Ministry of Culture posted a message on social media on January 13th promoting a Concert Photography Workshop. This sparked criticism for being insensitive to the deaths of photojournalists Berenice Giles and Miguel Ángel Rojas, which occurred during the Axe Ceremonia 2025 festival.
The text was accompanied by laughing emojis and a camera, elements that users interpreted as mockery, given that the first anniversary of the two young people’s deaths is just a few months away. Following the controversy, the message was deleted a day after its publication.
In response, the Justice for Miguel Collective stated on social media that “it’s not right to use death as a cool trope.”
