For the fourth time since 2025, the community of La Cofradía—part of the Santa María Ostula district in the municipality of Aquila—was attacked by an armed group from the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), according to community authorities in this Nahua region.
In a statement released on social media, community authorities reported that the La Cofradía community’s security detail was attacked again shortly after midnight (12:30 a.m.). “We don’t want to let it go unnoticed that this criminal group continues to attack us.”
In July 2025, La Cofradía was attacked for the third time with high-caliber weapons by gunmen from the Jalisco cartel. “The community guard repelled the attack, but the gunmen were better armed and attacked by surprise,” the community council reported at the time.
On April 24, almost a year ago, the second attack occurred when criminals again opened fire on the town and the neighboring village of Las Minas.
And in February 2025, for the first time, more than 40 gunmen shot at and set fire to the building that housed the offices responsible for maintaining order in La Cofradía, leaving it in ruins.
La Cofradía is located in the mountainous region, 18 kilometers from La Ticla, a community situated along the Lázaro Cárdenas-Colima coastal highway.
“The attacks by criminals against Ostula date back to the 1970s, and have always been related to the plundering of its natural resources, because the 17,000 hectares of the municipality contain minerals such as iron, silver, and gold, as well as precious woods that have been shipped to China,” stated community authorities.
The indigenous region of Aquila is important for drug trafficking, mainly cocaine, as boats from South America arrive there, and the coastal highway, known as the Pan-American route, connects directly to the ports of Manzanillo, Colima, and Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán.
