The Michoacán Fisheries Commission (Compesca) stocked 150,000 tilapia fingerlings in the Adolfo López Mateos Dam, better known as Infiernillo, in the municipality of Churumuco, to strengthen the fishing sector in the Tierra Caliente region through which the Balsas River flows.

Compesca Director Ramón Hernández Orozco reported that the fingerlings stocked are of excellent genetic quality, produced at the Technological Center for Fisheries and Aquaculture Production, Training, and Research (Cetaem), which guarantees better development, adaptation, and performance in the dam’s ecosystem.

He emphasized that this action was carried out in coordination with the Churumuco municipal government, which provided logistical support for transporting the fingerlings from Cetaem, considered one of the most important tilapia production centers in the country.

The Infiernillo Dam primarily benefits the municipalities of Arteaga, La Huacana, and Churumuco in Michoacán, as well as Coahuayutla in the state of Guerrero. In addition to generating electricity, the reservoir provides employment for hundreds of fishermen who catch carp and tilapia, and also supports freshwater shrimp farming.

Every one or two years, the reservoir is stocked with over 150,000 fingerlings for restocking and approximately 50,000 hormone-treated tilapia fingerlings for cage farming.
