Search collectives in Jalisco demanded the removal of the public prosecutor in Tequila, whom they accuse of alleged negligence in handling missing persons cases and a lack of follow-up on ongoing investigations in the region.
The petition was filed by the collectives Huellas de Amor (Footprints of Love) and Buscando Corazones (Searching for Hearts) in Jalisco, who stated that the official—identified as Karen Velázquez—has accumulated complaints from families alleging a lack of attention to submitted evidence, a lack of response, and a perceived disinterest in the progress of the investigations, according to local media reports.
Judith Ramos, a representative of Huellas de Amor, stated that there are cases in which, despite the families providing information, no results or institutional follow-up have been obtained. According to her testimony, this situation has led to the request for a review of all cases under the prosecutor’s responsibility in order to pursue her removal.
The Searching for Hearts collective in Jalisco added that it has also faced difficulties communicating with the official, including blocked digital channels and a lack of response to search requests in various areas of the municipality of Tequila, including areas where searches for human remains have been planned.
The organizations indicated that Velázquez replaced ministerial agent Ana Berenice Zúñiga Vargas, who is currently facing accusations of alleged omissions in another case related to the discovery at Rancho Izaguirre in Teuchitlán.
In the context of these complaints, one affected individual recounted that, after providing information at a working group meeting, their family was subjected to intimidation, including subsequent threats made at their home by third parties, according to their testimony.
The collectives insisted that the current conditions for handling investigation files have led to delays and a lack of results in the search for missing persons in the Tequila region, and therefore reiterated their request for intervention from the relevant authorities.
In this context, on February 5, the mayor of Tequila, Jalisco, Diego “N”, was arrested along with other officials as part of Operation Swarm, a deployment focused on investigating possible corruption networks within local governments.
According to intelligence reports, the mayor is accused of participating in an extortion scheme targeting companies in the beer and tequila industries, as well as having possible ties to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
The investigations place him as a likely operator of a structure within the City Hall that was allegedly used to pressure business owners through illegal payments.
Records also indicate that in May 2025, he was summoned to testify before the Jalisco Attorney General’s Office in connection with a musical event by the group Los Alegres del Barranco, where images of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” identified as the leader of the CJNG, were projected.
