New increase in toll booth fees in Chiapas

On Monday morning, several motorists reported an increase in the toll on the Chiapa de Corzo-San Cristóbal de Las Casas highway, which now costs 105 pesos for cars.

According to users, the toll increase took effect on Monday. Additionally, it was reported that the three toll booths on the Ocozocoautla-Arriaga toll road also saw an increase, with the tolls now costing 70, 116, and 75 pesos for cars, respectively.

So far, the responsible authorities have not issued an official statement regarding these increases, while users point out that the price hike directly impacts family budgets and commercial activity in the region.

In this regard, Mario Alberto Bustamante, vice president of the Chiapas Transportation Alliance, stated that these increases are not reflected in the infrastructure of these roads, which are riddled with potholes, such as the Jiquipilas-Arriaga section.

Furthermore, although it’s only a five-peso increase, in the case of the Chiapa de Corzo-San Cristóbal de Las Casas highway, it represents a blow to the finances of those who travel that route daily. Ultimately, it’s the user who pays for these increases.

“It’s an issue we’ve always raised: who regulates it? Is it the federal government or the concessionaires? You notice that every three or four months there’s already a new toll,” said Mario Alberto Bustamante.

It’s worth mentioning that the Chiapa de Corzo tollbooth’s last increase was in 2025, when it went from 95 pesos to 100 pesos. This increase is in addition to those applied in the last five years; in 2022, the toll was 45 pesos.

According to Caminos y Puentes Federales, on April 13th, toll rates in Mexico increased, with an average adjustment of between four and six percent. The new prices apply after the expiration of the 2025 rates.
