The US dollar opened trading this Friday, May 15, 2026, at an exchange rate of 17.23 Mexican pesos, according to information from the Bank of Mexico at the close of trading on the previous business day.

The official exchange rate is determined by the Bank of Mexico based on an average of wholesale exchange market quotes for transactions settled on the second business day following the closing date. These quotes are obtained from foreign exchange trading platforms and other electronic means representative of the foreign exchange market, the institution explained.

At Banamex, the dollar is trading at 16.66 pesos for buying and 17.62 pesos for selling.

Exchange rate fluctuations have direct effects on remittances, travel, border trade, international payment transactions, and the financial decisions of millions of people.

At Elektra – Banco Azteca, the dollar is currently trading at 16.00 MXN for buying and 18.09 MXN for selling.

At international money transfer companies, the dollar is currently trading at 16.84 MXN at Western Union.

Meanwhile, the exchange rate is 17.70 MXN per dollar at MoneyGram.

With a strong peso, as Mexico has had since 2023, not everyone benefits.

The so-called “superpeso” has a negative impact both on those who earn in dollars and live in Mexico and on those who receive remittances from family members in the United States.

In the case of remittances, if the exchange rate remains at current levels for the rest of the year, they will lose purchasing power.
