Nayarit Attorney General Elvia Ludmila Heredia Verdugo announced the results of several extortion investigations in the state, including a scheme that affected the distribution and sale of eggs.
During a meeting with ranchers, producers, and business representatives in Puente de Camotlán, municipality of La Yesca, the attorney general explained that investigators uncovered a system in which egg distributors and vendors were allegedly forced to pay a fee in order to sell the product.
Heredia Verdugo said the scheme imposed a 10% surcharge on egg sales, increasing the final price paid by consumers. She added that the investigation led to the arrest of the alleged perpetrators and stated that, following law enforcement actions, egg prices declined in the areas where the practice had been operating.
Authorities Also Addressed Other Extortion Cases
The attorney general reported that merchants in Rincón de Guayabitos are no longer being subjected to protection payments (“cobro de piso”), a practice that, according to authorities, had affected owners of beach restaurants and federal concession businesses for nearly two decades. She said the investigation resulted in the arrest of the alleged individuals responsible.
Heredia Verdugo also discussed a case uncovered in Santa María del Oro, where merchants were allegedly forced to purchase beer from a specific supplier at prices above market value. During law enforcement operations, authorities seized beverages with characteristics different from commercially available products, as well as properties linked to the investigation.
According to the attorney general, those allegedly involved in the scheme have also been arrested, allowing local businesses to resume purchasing products freely without coercion.
The attorney general concluded by reaffirming that the Nayarit State Attorney General’s Office will continue investigating the various forms of extortion affecting merchants, producers, and business owners, with the goal of bringing those responsible before the courts.
