After three decades without major investment, the Port of Progreso will undergo a modernization project with a total investment of 12.5 billion pesos.
The federal government will provide most of the funding, while the Government of Yucatán has invested 1.2 billion pesos in the first stage.
The Coordinator of Strategic Projects for the Government of Yucatán, Dafne López Martínez, stated that the state will move forward with the expansion and modernization of the Port of Progreso, a project expected to become a major driver of economic development in southeastern Mexico by creating better jobs, attracting more investment, and generating new opportunities for residents.
Among the expected benefits by 2028 is the arrival of larger cruise ships, as the project includes increasing the port’s maritime draft.
He explained that Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena managed to secure this flagship project.

He noted that the project has already been presented to the local community, as it is expected to benefit Progreso and the surrounding region through improved conditions for attracting businesses, expanding employment opportunities, and increasing wages.
He added that Yucatán continues to attract more people looking to live and invest in the state, making it necessary to strengthen education, workforce training, and industrial development to meet growing demand.
He reported that the bidding process for the construction is being handled by the Ministry of the Navy (Secretaría de Marina). The initial tender was recently declared void and is currently being reissued, with updates on the process expected in the coming days.
He emphasized that construction is progressing ahead of schedule and that, by the end of 2027, together with the launch of regional gas projects, the Port of Progreso will be integrated with the Maya Train freight service to strengthen logistics, attract investment, and expand cargo transportation.
He also stressed that the ports of southeastern Mexico will not compete with one another but will instead complement each other to promote regional economic growth.
