Residents of Lomas de Chapultepec, located within the Miguel Hidalgo borough of Mexico City, organized a public demonstration at the intersection of Monte Everest and Monte Athos to strongly oppose the imminent opening of a new bar at Monte Everest 705. Organized primarily by the community coalition RADAR (Red en Alerta para la Democracia, el Ambiente y la Participación), local homeowners and residents gathered with banners and chants to voice their concerns, arguing that the establishment flagrantly violates the residential zoning regulations currently in force for the neighborhood.
Protesters warned that the potential operation of the venue threatens to disrupt the area’s peaceful environment, worsening local traffic congestion, parking shortages, and noise pollution. Furthermore, community members expressed growing apprehension that Lomas de Chapultepec risks following the trajectory of commercial overdevelopment seen in nearby neighborhoods like Polanco, where commercial spaces have progressively encroached upon residential streets and public sidewalks. The demonstrators are urging municipal authorities to intervene, review current licensing procedures, and halt the project to safeguard the neighborhood’s primarily residential character.
