The body was discovered in a body of water in the Boca de la Cañada area, where authorities from all three levels of government had been conducting a search operation.
American Disappears After Going for a Walk in San Miguel de Allende
The San Miguel de Allende Secretariat of Public Security reported that the search operation began on Friday, July 31, after family members reported the disappearance of the 60-year-old American man, whose identity has not yet been released.
He was last seen in the area between the communities of Las Tinajas and Agustín González, where he had reportedly gone for a walk.
After receiving the missing person report, the Municipal Search Unit was activated, bringing together Municipal Police officers, Civil Protection personnel, the Red Cross, firefighters, and paramedics.
Authorities stated that the complexity of the terrain and the size of the search area required them to expand the operation and continue search efforts throughout the weekend.
On Saturday, August 1, members of the State Public Security Forces and the State Civil Protection agency joined the search, supported by a helicopter from the Secretariat of Security and Peace, allowing crews to extend the search to ravines, mountainous areas, and bodies of water.
However, search efforts were complicated by heavy rainfall on Saturday afternoon.
Dense vegetation, rugged terrain, and rising water levels in streams and reservoirs made it difficult for rescue teams to reach several areas.
On Sunday morning, during one of the search operations, rescuers located the body of the American citizen in a body of water within the area where search efforts had been concentrated.
Following the discovery, the area was secured, and the Guanajuato State Attorney General’s Office was notified to process the scene and begin the corresponding investigation.
What Is the Main Theory Behind the American Citizen’s Death?
Authorities stated that, based on the conditions at the location where the victim was found, one of the preliminary lines of investigation suggests that the man may have slipped or fallen into the body of water.
The Guanajuato State Attorney General’s Office will determine the exact circumstances surrounding the death through the appropriate forensic investigations.
Authorities also urged both residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution when traveling through mountainous areas during the rainy season, as heavy vegetation, uneven terrain, and rising water levels can make navigation difficult and significantly increase the risk of accidents.
San Miguel de Allende is home to thousands of foreign residents, primarily retired Americans, who have chosen the city as a place to enjoy their retirement.
