A woman was killed and two others were wounded in a drive-by shooting in the Pueblo Mágico (Magic Town) of Jerez, bringing the total number of violent incidents in the state to four in recent days.
The victims were in a pickup truck at the intersection of Tres Cruces and Esmeralda streets in the municipal seat, located 57 kilometers from the city of Zacatecas, when armed civilians in another vehicle opened fire on them with high-caliber weapons.
Although all three women were taken to a hospital, one of them died while receiving medical attention, confirmed the Secretary General of the Government of Zacatecas, Rodrigo Reyes Mugüerza, who clarified that the victim was not a minor, contrary to initial reports.
Security forces launched an operation to locate the attackers, but no arrests have been reported so far.
The state has been experiencing a wave of violence since last Friday. Mexican Army personnel, while repelling an armed attack on Sunday, killed one civilian and detained two minors.
Five civilians died during a confrontation on Saturday with state police in the community of Noria del Agostadero, in the municipality of Calera. Hours earlier, on Friday night, a state police officer was killed and two others were wounded in an attack with a vehicle laden with explosives in the municipality of Luis Moya, on the border with Aguascalientes.
