The construction of the new animal protection center in Los Cabos is currently 80% complete, and the work is expected to be finished by the end of September this year.
The center is being built on an 825-square-meter property donated by the Costa Palmas development. The project has an investment of 35 million pesos and aims to serve more than 136,000 residents in the area.
The General Director of Public Works and Human Settlements, Christopher Enríquez González, explained that the center will have four modules designed to provide different services.
The planned areas include a sterilization and recovery room, spaces with cages for the temporary shelter of animals, administrative offices, a storage area, and a crematorium.
The project also includes exterior improvements to ensure the facilities operate properly and provide comfort for people who visit to complete procedures or receive services:
- 10,956 square meters with exterior lighting throughout the property
- 2,540 square meters of walkways and parking areas
- Water, drainage, and electrical installations with its own power substation
- Additional areas, such as a farm for rescued livestock, an amphitheater, and gardens
The inauguration will not only be an official event, as it will begin with a large-scale medical care campaign for dogs and cats, both stray animals and pets with owners.
The General Directorate of Ecology and Environment is preparing a sterilization campaign that will begin on the same day as the center’s inauguration. The event will be carried out with the support of organizations such as Casa Sheila and veterinary medicine students from the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur.
The goal of the inauguration is to provide care for more than 900 dogs and cats in a single day, surpassing previous records in the country. In addition, authorities plan to bring these campaigns to different areas of the municipality.
This center was made possible through cooperation between the government and the private sector. Hugo Pinedo, project director on behalf of Costa Palmas, stated that the company will continue supporting initiatives focused on community welfare.
Once opened, the facility will provide veterinary services, adoption programs, emergency care, and workshops aimed at teaching young people about responsible animal care.
Authorities stated that these facilities will address a long-standing need in San José del Cabo and surrounding areas, especially regarding animal health and pet population control.
