The road project includes a bridge more than 900 meters long to optimize the route toward the World Trade Bridge. The modernization of highway access routes in Nuevo Laredo strengthens the city as a fundamental logistics hub on the northern border.
After remaining pending for more than 25 years, the second carriageway of the MEX II highway and its vehicular bridge have been completed, a strategic project designed to expedite freight traffic and improve connectivity toward the World Trade Bridge.
The project represented a municipal investment of 283.22 million pesos and is part of the projects highlighted by Mayor Carmen Lilia Canturosas Villarreal ahead of her second government report.
Developing the infrastructure required authorization from the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT), since the work was carried out in an area under federal jurisdiction, although the resources were provided by the municipality.
Road modernization after 25 years of waiting in Tamaulipas
The importance of MEX II lies in the volume of heavy transportation it handles daily. According to information from the municipal government, more than 16,000 freight vehicles travel along this bypass every day carrying import and export goods between Mexico and the United States.
The project includes 1,600 linear meters of roadway, as well as a 944.72-meter-long vehicular bridge, access ramps, and a 67.91-meter superstructure. The roadway is 14.15 meters wide and features safety parapets.
The expansion seeks to reduce travel times, provide greater safety for drivers, and improve the flow of vehicles heading toward the World Trade Bridge.
The project will further connect Tamaulipas
The municipal administration stated that the project was made possible through coordination with the federal and state governments, after decades in which the growth of foreign trade and heavy traffic increased the need to expand this roadway.
Nuevo Laredo is home to one of the main land crossings for goods between Mexico and the United States, so the modernization of its highway access routes has an impact not only on local mobility but also on the logistics chains connected to international trade.
The completion of the second carriageway of MEX II therefore represents one of the main infrastructure projects of the current municipal administration and seeks to respond to Nuevo Laredo’s continued growth as one of the main logistics hubs on the northern border.
