Tamaulipas seeks full electrification by 2027: more than 2,000 homes remain without service.

The Tamaulipas State Government’s goal is to achieve full electrification of the state by 2027, ensuring that 100% of homes have access to electricity.

Walter Julián Jiménez, the state’s Secretary of Energy Development, reported that the program to achieve this goal is ready, and that an official event will soon be held in which the governor will launch the final equipment delivery.

Tamaulipas: A Likely Pioneering State in Electric Power

The official explained that the systems that will be distributed to homes still without electricity consist of photovoltaic models, suitable for covering basic household needs. It is estimated that more than 2,000 homes still do not have electricity, mainly in the municipalities of Reynosa, Victoria, Tampico, Llera, and Gómez Farías.

“In Tamaulipas, we are the first state with a real possibility of achieving full electrification in Mexico,” he emphasized.

Rate Standardization: An Issue Still Under Discussion

Regarding the standardization of electricity rates, Jiménez clarified that this benefit is not intended for the entire population, but rather for the poorest areas.

He explained that there is ongoing dialogue between the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and the National Water Commission (Conagua), as the climate indicators used by the CFE do not adequately reflect the actual temperatures in Tamaulipas, which has hindered migration to preferential rates such as the 1F.

“The problem has to do with a discussion between the CFE and Conagua. The measurement indicators do not correspond to our temperatures, which is why we have not been able to migrate to the 1F rate,” he noted.

He also said that one of the main challenges is ensuring that thermal measurements are adjusted to the reality of Tamaulipas, so that at least the most disadvantaged and socially marginalized households can benefit.

Energy Efficiency Promoted in the Gulf Region

The Minister of Energy Development also highlighted the need to reduce energy waste in homes, which is why an energy efficiency access program is being promoted. This program seeks to help mitigate the cost of tariffs through better consumption practices.

“Tips for reducing energy expenditure are shared on the Secretariat’s networks, but we need to convince the population. In the industrial sector, for example, they complain about blackouts, but they haven’t approached the options we offer, such as the use of storage systems,” he added.

Jiménez explained that the electrification push will now focus on underserved areas and households. Coverage will be implemented by region, as the programs progress and the corresponding resources are released for Tamaulipas.
