Chinese tourists who were victims of theft in Cozumel, with the support of police authorities, recovered their cell phones in stores in Playa del Carmen after an intense search using satellite tracking.

The incident was shared on social media, where two Chinese tourists who arrived in Cozumel to enjoy their vacation never imagined that in this paradise they would become victims of theft.

Rather than a carefree vacation, they became cyber-investigators after being mentally tormented by the loss of their cell phones. The tourists took matters into their own hands and began satellite tracking, and were shocked to locate their phones off the island. They weren’t in the hands of just anyone; they were already being sold in a cell phone store in Playa del Carmen.

The tourists requested assistance from the tourist police, who went to the establishment and confirmed that their phones were inside the store.

According to reports, the phones were allegedly sold by a homeless person, although another version suggests it could be a criminal network. While the phones were recovered, no arrests have been reported to initiate an investigation.

Despite the evidence pointing to a possible criminal network targeting tourists and the serious impact this climate of insecurity has on the destination, the Playa del Carmen Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) has no record of any phone recoveries.

Aunque los teléfonos fueron devueltos, no se reportaron personas detenidas ni una investigación formal
