Members of LGBT+ groups mobilized in Michoacán to demand justice for the transfemicide of Daniela Martínez Silva, whose case has sparked outrage due to the violence and the way it was reported.
The demonstration began in Plaza Villalongín, where protesters displayed a banner with Daniela’s image and carried trans community flags.
They then marched along Avenida Madero to the local Congress building, where they denounced the lack of legislation regarding transfemicides.
The groups pointed out that Daniela was found dead with visible signs of violence, which exacerbated public outrage.
They also criticized the way some initial reports covered the case, referring to the victim as “a man dressed as a woman,” which, they asserted, violates her identity and human rights.
Among their main demands are respect for gender identity and an end to revictimization in the media.
During the demonstration, activists pointed out that at least eight transgender people have been murdered in the state, reflecting a context of persistent violence.
For his part, Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla acknowledged that there are outstanding legislative issues, but reiterated that all murders of women in the state must be investigated as femicides.
