Among the most important procedures to consider for 2026 in Mexico City is the registration of Personal Electric Motor Vehicles (VEMEPE) and Personal Electric Vehicles (VEP), following the official announcement of the process by the Ministry of Mobility (Semovi).
Owners must begin the registration through the Vehicle Procedures System, although it only applies under certain circumstances, so here we will explain in which cases registration is required, the cost, and how to complete it step by step.
Which electric vehicles must be registered in Mexico City?
In the case of VEMEPE, the procedure includes the issuance of license plates, a registration card, and the Electric Mobility Badge (DME), while VEPs will only receive the Electric Mobility Badge.
The measure includes the following types of vehicles that must comply with registration in Mexico City:
- Units with an independent accelerator and an electric motor that exceed 25 km/h or have a power output between 250 watts and one kilowatt.
- Type A corresponds to vehicles weighing less than 35 kilograms, and Type B corresponds to those weighing between 35 and 350 kilograms.
- It is important to mention that electric scooters or bicycles that do not exceed 25 km/h will be considered non-motorized vehicles and are therefore exempt from this regulation.
Likewise, those VEMEPE vehicles that exceed the maximum power of 1,000 watts will be recognized as electric motorcycles, requiring the registration process corresponding to that category.
