Heavy rains on Friday afternoon caused flooding, road damage, and the mobilization of emergency crews in southern Mexico City, primarily in the Tlalpan borough.
One of the hardest-hit neighborhoods was Miguel Hidalgo Tercera Sección after the storm drain overflowed, creating a pool of water approximately 100 meters long and 80 centimeters deep between Adolfo Ruiz Cortines and Benito Juárez streets.
Similarly, Hermenegildo Galeana Street was flooded, reaching a depth of approximately 80 centimeters and a length of 300 meters, where a public transport bus and a private vehicle were stranded.
According to authorities, nine homes were flooded, and eight vehicles parked inside an auto repair shop were partially submerged.
In the Padierna neighborhood, at the intersection of Homún Street, three people were trapped inside their vehicles after the water level rose to over a meter high. Neighbors and a police officer managed to rescue them before the situation worsened.
In Santa Úrsula Xitla, near Patio Tlalpan, significant flooding was reported, while on the Picacho-Ajusco highway, the current surged powerfully across the roadway. Additionally, a motorcycle was swept away by the current, and another motorcyclist skidded due to the wet pavement.
A major sewage leak was reported at the intersection of Calzada de Tlalpan and Juan de Dios Bátiz, near the Periférico ring road, in the Toriello Guerra neighborhood.
Civil Protection and Urban Services crews from the Tlalpan borough worked to facilitate the drainage of the accumulated water, and personnel from the Secretariat of Comprehensive Water Management addressed various flooded areas.
Tree Falls and Power Outages
In downtown Tlalpan, heavy rains caused two trees to fall, leaving part of the neighborhood without power.
In the Álvaro Obregón borough, a tree approximately 25 meters tall fell on a house located at the intersection of Azoyapan and Muites streets in the Santa Rosa Xochiac neighborhood. No injuries were reported.
In San Bartolo Ameyalco, another tree, around 20 meters tall, fell on power lines, causing two concrete poles to collapse.
In Gustavo A. Madero, a tree also fell in the El Coyol neighborhood.
Roads Affected by the Rains
The rains also caused problems for drivers. On Insurgentes Avenue, near El Caminero, traffic was partially affected due to flooding.
Also, on the Periférico, near the Bordo de Xochiaca, a huge pothole hidden by accumulated water was detected, so it is recommended to take extreme precautions when traveling through the area.
