Governor of Coahuila Manolo Jiménez Salinas reported that, in addition to the air route to Guadalajara, new domestic destinations are being considered and, in a second stage, the possibility of establishing flights to the United States.
On Sunday afternoon, the governor said that the flight to Guadalajara is scheduled to begin operations in December and that work is underway to open new routes that would expand the state’s air connectivity.
“Well, the Guadalajara route is already set for December, and hopefully more flights to Mexico City will be opened, as well as other tourist destinations such as Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos. The idea is to gradually increase the flight options here at the airport serving the southeastern region. It is something that will happen gradually, but we have already started; there is a commitment from the company with which we formed an alliance to continue investing, growing and strengthening connectivity in the southeastern region of our state,” he said.
Jiménez Salinas mentioned Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos among the destinations that could be added, along with other cities across the country. He explained that the expansion of routes will take place gradually, depending on passenger demand.
“20 or 30% of the people are from Nuevo León, so the truth is that for many people who live in Nuevo León, we are trying to increase [the passenger base] to 1 million and 1.3 million here in the southeastern region. You have people from Monclova who use Monterrey’s airport. So you also have that captive customer base. Plus, around 20% of the customers are from Nuevo León; you have about 400,000 or 500,000 people from Nuevo León here in neighboring municipalities, such as Santa Catarina, San Pedro and García. So, in other words, we have almost 2 million captive residents for flights here at the airport in the southeastern region of Coahuila,” he said.
The first stage focuses on strengthening connectivity with domestic cities. Subsequently, depending on the performance of the routes and passenger demand, authorities will analyze the possibility of opening flights to the United States.
The governor indicated that the flights currently operating from Coahuila have high occupancy rates, a situation that, he said, makes it possible to consider adding new destinations.
